The Belgravia Bed & Breakfast is conveniently located at 5 Broad Street in beautiful downtown Truro, the “hub” of Nova Scotia. The Belgravia is owned and run by D’Arcy & Anne McDonah, with Anne’s parents, Dave (Surveyor, artist & author) & Deanna (retired elementary school teacher, sewer, knitter & quilter), often stopping by to help out and occasionally guest-hosting. D’Arcy, a junior high school math & Science teacher in nearby Onslow, was born in Cape Breton but grew up in Halifax. Anne has been teaching Tourism Management at the Nova Scotia Community College for the past two years, and sits on the Boards of the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia, the Truro & District Chamber of Commerce and Truro’s Cantabile Society. She is the Nova Scotia Bed & Breakfast Association representative on the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council. Born & raised in Truro, Anne played at the Belgravia (which was then a private home) as a child.
D’Arcy & Anne are very active within the community and believe in leading by example, so spend much of their free time volunteering. D’Arcy is a Scout leader whose real love is wood working. He is happy to show off his handmade cedar strip canoe and is anxious to build another, but wood-working projects lately have been more practical jobs like building the back deck & pergola, as well as other household jobs. He is a runner and curls one night each week, also coaching his school curling team. Anne has a love of cooking & entertaining and is never happier than when hosting a crowd. In addition to volunteering with various boards, she looks forward to book club each month, and is a fair-weather runner.
Guests may or may not meet the Belgravia children. Growing up in a Bed & Breakfast has fostered a love of geography and they are sure to add a sticker to their world map every time they welcome somebody from a new location into their home. A highlight this year for Evan, the oldest, is a school exchange to Brazil. Activities the children enjoy include band, choir, curling, basketball, baseball, Scouts, piano, ballet, jazz, highland dance, theatre, Battle-of-the-Books club and running. Although the kids reside in a different part of the house than the guests do, The Belgravia is a peanut and nut-free home due to the youngest daughter’s anaphylactic allergies.
D’Arcy & Anne are well trained and easily able to accommodate any food allergies or dietary restrictions and use local or home-grown ingredients whenever possible. They have a wide variety of tasty recipes for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, you-name-it-free diets! Please let your hosts know your needs when you check in.
